A Terrace Transformed to Improve Access and Usability
Althorne: a much needed terrace replacement
This Tenterden garden had uneven, ageing terraces that made access difficult and the space uninviting. Our goal was to refresh the layout and materials to create a safe, step-free garden that’s both beautiful and practical — perfectly suited to modern living.

This project focused on re-imagining tired hard landscaping and bringing new life to the garden’s flow and usability.
We replaced worn concrete pavers and unstable decking with elegant Raj Green sandstone, complemented by Autumn Brown sandstone setts to link different levels seamlessly. The new terrace provides smooth, step-free access from the front driveway to key areas of the garden, making it accessible for all while adding timeless warmth and charm.
At the client’s request, we also built raised beds close to the house for a new vegetable garden — a simple, stylish way to combine beauty and productivity.

Our clients had recently purchased the property and wanted a simple but welcoming outdoor space to complement their planned interior renovations. We created a clean, cost-effective design featuring sandstone paving and Autumn Brown setts for a timeless, cohesive look.
To make the most of the afternoon sun, we added a second terrace further down the garden, complete with a pergola and new planting areas — creating a peaceful spot to relax and enjoy the warmth of the day.
Step-free access from front to rear garden
The side pathways originally had awkward level changes that made the garden difficult to reach. Our redesign focused on creating a smooth, step-free route from the front drive all the way to the rear terrace.
A gently sloped sandstone sett ramp now connects each level safely and seamlessly, removing barriers and improving day-to-day usability. The result is a garden that feels open, connected, and easy to enjoy — from the main terrace right down to the lower sun terrace.
This garden shows how those ideas come to life — with gentle gradients, step-free access, and a layout that invites everyone to enjoy the outdoors.
