The art of adding depth and interest to make the most of a courtyard garden

Set in mid Kent, the Courtyard Garden project demonstrates how thoughtful design can provide interest and depth in an enclosed walled garden. Our brief was to provide a clay paving path curving through a timber pergola and extensive planting to a seating area and small store at the rear of the garden.

The Challenge: SCREEN AND CREATE INTEREST
This garden presented an opportunity to create interest, loosen up straight lines and provide tranquility.
We softened the garden and made it more fluid by introducing curves and breaking up the existing straight lines. The patio area was staggered into the garden, creating a more relaxed transition between the terrace and the planting areas.
A curved brick path was constructed leading through the garden towards a small feature terrace at the rear. This terrace used the same sandstone as the patio to which we added a bench with a large garden mirror set onto the wall behind bench amongst the ivy to give a sense of openness and interest.
Antique Red Clay pavers were used for the path to complement and pick up the character of the existing brick walls.
Designing with Purpose: Concealing and Captivating
Trees for Privacy and a Detailed Planting Plan
The existing magnolia was carefully pruned and lifted to create a more open, canopied form, exposing sections of the trunk and allowing greater visibility beneath the tree.
Additional trees were introduced around and within the garden boundaries to create additional privacy and a stronger sense of enclosure. A detailed planting plan was implemented together with an irrigation system.
Depth and Height
We constructed a framework of gazebo style single posts and crossbars placed across path for growing climbers to add height and to break view from neighbouring properties.
