After sitting vacant for more than three years, this townhouse garden needed a complete rethink. Our goal was to breathe new life into the space — blending bold new features with planting that would thrive year-round. The result is a garden that now feels alive again, filled with texture, colour, and structure.

The Challenge: Reclaiming Neglect
When we first arrived, the garden was overgrown, uneven, and lacking identity. The homeowners wanted to restore it to its former glory while making it easier to maintain. Our team redesigned the layout, introduced new focal points, and combined vibrant planting with clean, modern lines — showing how expert garden design can completely change the feel of an urban property.

Full Redesign: Bringing Beauty Back
In the front garden, we created a balance between practicality and kerb appeal. Off-street parking is highly valuable in central Tunbridge Wells, so we restructured the layout to include space for two cars without sacrificing charm. Using elegant grey sandstone cobbles, we linked the entrance and side pathway seamlessly, ensuring the space feels polished yet functional.
To complement this, we added colourful planting beds with carefully chosen focal points visible from both the garden and the home’s interior — connecting the inside and outside spaces visually and emotionally.
Bespoke Wide Steps: Functional Elegance
A key element of the redesign was a set of bespoke wide steps leading from the lower ground courtyard up to the lawn and terrace. These steps not only give the garden a sense of scale and symmetry but also allow morning light to pour into the lower floor, brightening the interior and enhancing the connection between house and garden.
Revamping the Front Garden
In central Tunbridge Wells, off-street parking is invaluable, so we reworked the front garden to add space for two vehicles without losing kerb appeal. Grey sandstone cobbles run from the entrance to the side path, creating a smart, cohesive finish that’s both practical and elegant.
Championing Native Flora
To keep the design grounded in its Kentish setting, we planted native and drought-tolerant species, including English lavender and hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna stricta). The lavender softens the new brick retaining wall and fills the garden with fragrance, while the columnar hawthorn adds vertical structure and seasonal interest — perfectly suited to a street-facing position. The result is a garden that feels both elegant and ecologically balanced.
