Enhancing a Victorian Semi-Detached Home: A Family’s Garden Makeover on a Budget
A Family Garden Makeover on a Budget
This project in the heart of Tunbridge Wells transformed a small, neglected garden into a bright and practical outdoor space for a young family. Working within a modest budget, we focused on long-lasting materials, clever layout choices, and solutions that balanced beauty with function.

Client Story: From Vision to Reality
Our clients, a young family renovating their Victorian semi-detached home, wanted their garden to reflect the same sense of renewal. The space had potential but needed structure, warmth, and easy upkeep. With most of their budget already dedicated to interior work, our challenge was to deliver a stylish, durable design without compromise.
At Barker & Farris, we believe that great garden design should feel effortless — even on a budget. The Stephens Road project is a perfect example of how thoughtful choices and craftsmanship can completely transform a compact space.

Revitalising Design: Deck, Lawn, and Wall Transformation
Tackling Neglect and Maximising Usability
Our brief was clear: breathe new life into the garden by replacing the tired lawn, adding a new deck, and tackling the neglected rear wall that was hidden behind ivy from the neighbouring garden. The front garden also needed attention — its heavy clay soil called for a bespoke planting plan to improve drainage and encourage healthy growth.
Smart Solutions, Lasting Results
Drawing on our experience, we recommended Jacksons timber decking and Jacksons Venetian panels to transform the rear boundary. Durable, attractive, and backed by a 25-year guarantee, they offered the perfect long-term solution for our budget-conscious clients.
To balance the garden levels with the higher neighbouring plot, we installed a raised bed along the right-hand boundary. This subtle structural feature brings harmony and depth, creating a seamless transition that makes the whole space feel more open and cohesive.
Front Garden Revival: Clay Soil Challenge Accepted!
The front garden came with its own challenges — heavy clay soil that trapped water and limited plant growth. We removed around 100mm of compacted clay and mixed in nutrient-rich mushroom compost to improve drainage and structure. This simple but essential groundwork created the perfect foundation for healthy planting and long-lasting colour throughout the seasons.
Year-Round Allure: Crafting Nature’s Palette
At Barker & Farris, we believe a well-planned garden should look good in every season. Our planting scheme for Stephens Road balances colour, texture, and structure — combining hardy evergreens with seasonal highlights to create interest all year round.
This project reflects our commitment to achieving lasting beauty on any budget. Thoughtful design, smart material choices, and attention to detail turned a compact space into a garden that feels vibrant, personal, and easy to enjoy every day.
